Diabetes is a lifestyle disease in which blood glucose or blood sugar levels are very high. Our body gets glucose from the food we eat.
Insulin is a hormone which helps the glucose to get into the cells to get energy. In type 1 diabetes the body does not make enough insulin and in type 2 diabetes, the body is not able to make use of insulin well. Prediabetes is a condition in which the blood sugar is higher than normal but not that high to be called diabetes.
Due to the lack of insulin, the cells are not able to use glucose as energy, which is why it stays in the blood, causing high blood sugar. Insulin Aspart is widely recommended as it is a rapidly acting blood sugar controlling product. It is available in the form of an insulin pen or flex pen which makes it easy to use.
A person suffering from type1 or type2 diabetes experience the following symptoms:
- Weight loss
- Excessive thirst
- Increased urine output
- Slow wound healing
- Skin issue
- Yeast infection
- Excessive hunger
- Numbness in feet and toes
Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to various health complications such as eye problem, sexual dysfunction, neuropathy, and risk of cardiovascular diseases.
Action mechanism of Insulin Aspart:
Insulin aspart is produced by a method known as recombinant technology (a yeast receives a gene which makes it possible to produce insulin aspart).
This medication is available in two different forms:
- Soluble form, which works within 10 minutes of injection
- Crystallized form, which is absorbed slowly during the day
This replacement insulin works the same as human insulin by helping glucose to enter the blood. It helps in controlling blood sugar and the associated symptoms and complications. It is the fastest way to control diabetes and the most common treatment for type 1 diabetes.
The injection is given under the skin fat and is quickly absorbed by the bloodstream. The type and frequency should always be decided by the doctor.
Benefits of Insulin Aspart (Novomix):
It is a widely recommended treatment for type 1 diabetes as it is able to lower the blood sugar quickly. Its action is the same or faster than human insulin and is capable of controlling the glucose level.
It reduces the symptoms associated with the condition and also the related complications such as kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, and sexual problems.
It is available in the form of pre-filled syringes such as flex pen and insulin pen which can be used easily by everyone.
Dosage and storage of Insulin Aspart (Novomix):
This is a human insulin analog and is prescribed to improve the glycaemic control in adult and children suffering from diabetes mellitus.
The dosage varies according to the type of diabetes and also on the weight of an individual. Adjust the dosage based on the route of administration, individual’s metabolic needs, and glycaemic control goals.
Dosage is also adjusted with the change in the physical activity, eating patterns, renal or hepatic function, or during acute illness.
The change in the dosage is done only by the doctor prescribing it. You should never try to bring in the fluctuation in the dosage yourself.
This medication should always be stored in a refrigerator between 2° to 8°C. It should not be exposed to extreme heat or light and also should not be frozen.
If frozen, do not use it. If using a flex pen or insulin pen, discard the needle after each injection and store it without a needle attached. This prevents the chances of infection, leaking and ensures accurate dosing.
Precautions of taking Insulin Aspart (Novomix):
This is an injectable product used to control blood sugar which is why there are certain precautions to be kept in mind while using it.
- Never share the flex pen or the insulin pen even after changing the needle. It may increase the risk of blood borne infections.
- Changes in the dosage should be done cautiously and under close medical supervision as it might affect the glycaemic control and can lead to hypoglycaemia. Keep a check by increasing the frequency of blood glucose monitoring,
- Be aware of the symptoms of hypoglycemia as it is the most common adverse effect of using this medication. Hypoglycemia symptoms can happen suddenly and may pose a risk to the health depending on the situation a person is in.
Side effects of Insulin Aspart (Novomix):
This medication rapidly brings down the blood sugar level. One should be very cautious while using it as there are certain side effects associated.
Hypoglycemia: This is the most common side effect of administering Novomix which causes the following symptoms:
- Rapid heartbeat
- Difficulty in concentration
- Confusion and seizure
Allergy at the site of injection which can display plain, redness and irritation. These conditions are mostly self-limiting.
Low potassium level (hypokalemia) in the blood with symptoms such as muscle cramps, rapid heartbeat, and weakness. Insulin can lead to a shift of potassium from extracellular to intracellular space. Untreated hypokalemia can lead to paralysis, ventricular arrhythmia, and death.
Lipodystrophy (depression in the skin) and lipohypertrophy (enlargement or thickening of the tissue) is seen in some patients taking this medication.
Weight gain due to the anabolic effect of insulin and the decrease in glucosuria is seen is some patients.
It is important to tell the doctor if any of the above side effects are experienced. Also, there are certain over-the-counter medicines such as vitamins, minerals, herbal products and other medicines, which can increase or decrease the effect of insulin. It is therefore important to keep the doctor informed about the same.
